Chapter 189
As soon as she spoke, not only did Daisy get angry, but Alvin's face darkened.
Daisy glared at Nora. "Your man? I remember you cheated on him over a decade ago and divorced him two years ago when he was down and out."
Daisy paused, then looked at Alvin with a mocking smile. "Are you two rekindling your old flame and getting remarried?"
Nora's face changed dramatically, and she raised her voice. "What nonsense are you spouting? My family's business is none of your concern!"
As she spoke, she tightened her grip on Alvin's arm.
Alvin frowned deeply, a hint of annoyance in his eyes. With a slight effort, he freed himself from her grasp.
"We're not getting remarried."
That brief sentence eased Daisy's expression a bit.
"Alvin!" Nora called out softly. Though she was older, her frequent visits to beauty salons and diligent self-care had preserved her mature charm.
Daisy snorted and rolled her eyes. "Are we leaving or not?" She glanced at Alvin, her tone tinged with impatience.
"Yes." Alvin responded sullenly and followed her.
"Alvin! Alvin!" Nora jumped out of bed in a hurry. "You can't leave. I'm still feeling unwell. What if something happens to me after you go?"
Alvin's steps faltered slightly.
Daisy's narrow eyes squinted as she turned back and yanked him out, muttering, "What are you worried about? During the years you were in prison, she lived quite comfortably without you! But Victoria had to work day and night to support her and her lover's son while they were living the high life!"
Victoria was Alvin's bottom line. The hardships she endured over the years had left deep, unhealed scars in Alvin's heart.
"You vile woman, stop talking nonsense!" Nora lunged forward, trying to explain, but Alvin turned and walked away without even sparing her a glance.
"Alvin!" Nora called out again.
Daisy stepped in front of her, her gaze darkening as she approached, lowering her voice with a menacing edge. "You're right. I do have ulterior motives. This man will be mine sooner or later, so you better give up now!"
"You bitch!" Nora raised her hand, ready to slap Daisy.
Daisy quickly caught her wrist, pushed her back, and slammed the door shut.
She straightened her clothes, turned around gracefully, and felt a wave of satisfaction.
But when she looked up, she saw Alvin standing at the end of the hallway.
Daisy pouted, slowly walked over in her high heels, and mumbled pitifully, "My feet hurt."
Alvin glanced at her indifferently, said nothing, and started walking away.
Daisy made a face behind his back, grumbling to herself, 'So heartless!'
As soon as the elevator doors opened, she stumbled and nearly twisted her ankle, hobbling out awkwardly.
Daisy was genuinely annoyed now. She had only pretended her foot pain, but it turned out to be true.
She cursed Alvin under her breath, but when she looked up, she saw him waiting outside the elevator with a pair of fluffy slippers in his hand.
Without a word, he knelt down, held her ankle, swiftly removed her high heels, and put the slippers on her.
Daisy looked down at him, a small smile forming on her lips.
"Let's go." Alvin stood up and walked ahead.
Daisy felt much lighter on her feet, quickly catching up and linking her arm with his.
Alvin's body stiffened, and he tried to pull his arm back, but she held on tightly.
"Nora can hold you, but I can't? Are you still thinking about her?"
Before he could respond, Daisy fired off a rapid series of questions. "Alvin, are you blind? You have a beautiful, wealthy woman like me right here, and you still want your ex-wife? I'm telling you, if you dare remarry her, I'll turn your life upside down. Believe it or not?"
Alvin opened his mouth, glanced at her, then slowly pressed his lips together, his eyes full of helplessness.
Once they were out of the hotel, he finally spoke softly. "I won't remarry her."
Daisy was momentarily stunned, then broke into a wide smile, leaning closer to him. "What did you say? The wind's too strong, I didn't hear you."
To Alvin, she seemed like a mischievous little girl.
He extended a finger and gently poked her forehead. "Get in the car."
Alvin got in first, and Daisy stood there, covering her mouth with a smile.
Once inside, Daisy sent a message to Victoria: [Got him!]
Victoria replied instantly with a thumbs-up emoji.
Somehow, Alvin caught a glimpse of their conversation.
He raised an eyebrow slightly. "Victoria?"
Daisy didn't hide it, chatting with Victoria while asking, "What do you think Victoria should call me in the future? Ms. Scott sounds too formal, but calling me Mom feels awkward."
Alvin pretended not to hear, focusing on driving.
At a red light, Daisy suddenly reached over, hooked her arm around his neck, pulled him close, and kissed his cheek, snapping several photos in quick succession.
Alvin frowned, about to ask, "You..."
Daisy looked down, busy editing the photos on her phone. "I finally got you, of course I have to announce it to the world!"
Alvin sighed helplessly. Just then, the light turned green, and he restarted the car and drove off.
Victoria sat at her desk, studying. An open book lay in front of her, with a ring quietly resting beside it.
She hesitated, wondering if she should ask William about it. But what if the ring wasn't from him?
Wouldn't that be awkward?
As she wrestled with her thoughts, Wendy called.
"Victoria! Check the news, your mom tried to kill herself at a hotel."
Victoria froze, then hurriedly clicked the link Wendy sent. It was a video taken by a hotel guest.
In the footage, Nora was being carried into an ambulance, with onlookers whispering that her husband had a mistress who flaunted it on social media, driving her to take an overdose of sleeping pills. She had called the hotel in a daze, and soon she was noticed and received prompt medical attention.
Almost simultaneously, Samuel called, his voice urgent. "Wait for me, I'll take you to the hospital!"
