Chapter 221
The recent harrowing scene had Victoria's heart nearly stopping from fear.
Their car had almost crashed head-on.
With no other choice, they were forced to turn onto a narrow mountain road. William's brow was furrowed, his stern face heavy with concern. In a deep voice, he said, "Victoria, send Harry our real-time location."
Victoria quickly pulled out her phone, her fingers flying over the screen as she sent Harry their location.
On this mountain road, it seemed like it was just their car and the relentless pursuers behind them.
William's foot stayed firmly on the gas pedal, the car's speed not decreasing but steadily increasing.
Victoria knew those people had deliberately driven them onto this road. The thought made her palms sweat, a sense of foreboding rising within her. She was certain those people wouldn't give up easily.
After sending the message, Victoria was still nervous and couldn't help but ask, "Why didn't you let me send the location earlier?"
William had noticed they were being followed much earlier but only told her to send the location after she asked. This puzzled Victoria.
Seeing his calm demeanor, Victoria wondered if he already had a plan?
William heard her question and was silent for a moment before a slightly awkward smile tugged at his lips. He joked, "I thought I could lose them with my driving skills."
Victoria looked at his somewhat guilty expression, feeling both amused and exasperated, momentarily at a loss for words.
But somehow, his half-joking remark seemed to ease her panic a bit.
Even though they had sent a distress signal to Harry, the situation was still dire.
The car sped along the winding mountain road, the engine roaring deafeningly, making Victoria's adrenaline spike.
The vehicles behind them pursued like phantoms. Amid the noise, Victoria faintly heard the sound of rushing water. She instinctively looked out William's window.
Her heart sank. The road passed by a cliff, below which a raging, turbulent river flowed.
Several times, the cars behind them nearly caught up, clearly intending to force their car to stop.
As they passed another fork in the road, a black SUV suddenly barreled down from the side road.
The driver probably never expected so many speeding cars on this mountain road at midnight.
With a sharp screech of brakes and a loud crash, it collided violently with one of the pursuing cars.
Inside their car, William's grip on the steering wheel tightened, his knuckles turning white.
Victoria was so scared she covered her mouth, forgetting to scream.
William quickly glanced in the rearview mirror, but the smoke and chaos from the crash made it impossible to see if anyone in the other car was still alive.
He immediately shifted gears and accelerated, trying to shake off their pursuers.
Victoria slumped against the seat, her legs weak, still in shock.
William noticed her pale face out of the corner of his eye and asked, "Are you okay?"
Victoria took a deep breath and shook her head.
The cars behind them showed no signs of stopping, relentlessly speeding past the crash site to continue their pursuit.
Victoria watched the chaotic scene behind them, her heart pounding.
This was the second time she faced such a life-and-death moment.
The first time, she had been kidnapped and buried alive, thinking she was surely going to die, until William showed up and saved her.
Now, the threat of death loomed again.
She wasn't afraid of dying, but she couldn't bear the thought of what would happen to Alvin if something happened to her.
Thinking of this, Victoria suddenly started crying, tears streaming down her face, sobs escaping her throat uncontrollably.
"Victoria?"
Hearing William's voice, she slowly turned her head, staring at him through tear-filled eyes.
William frowned at her, his tone unusually gentle, "Don't be afraid, I'm here."
Victoria stared at him, and whether it was the lighting or something else, William's handsome face seemed to have a faint blush.
For some reason, his reassurance inexplicably made her feel a bit calmer.
The people behind them seemed to realize that forcing them to stop wasn't easy and crazily decided to speed up and ram them directly. The madness of it sent chills down her spine.
Victoria gripped the handle above her head tightly, her fingers turning white from the pressure. She looked at William, and in this extremely tense moment, a bizarre thought crossed her mind-if she was with him, even facing death didn't seem so bad.
William seemed to sense her gaze and turned to meet her eyes, his face showing no panic, but rather a hint of a roguish smile.
He raised his chin and asked, "Do you think we'd die faster if they rammed us or if we drove off the cliff?"
His tone carried a strange excitement, as if they weren't the ones being chased and on the brink of death, but characters in a game he controlled, where life and death were just part of the thrill.
Victoria followed his gaze to the cliff below, seeing the raging river. If they fell, it wasn't just a matter of the car being destroyed; even if it didn't explode, they could drown in the water.
She shivered but knew that if those people caught them, their fate wouldn't be any better.
Victoria took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, her voice trembling but resolute, "Either way, we die."
Facing a dead end no matter what, they might as well take a leap of faith. Maybe they could find a slim chance of survival in the midst of despair.
After all, with so many cars chasing them, if they were taken elsewhere, it would be even harder for Harry to find them in this remote area.
With this thought, her hand slowly moved to the door lock, ready to face death, determined to go down fighting.
William glanced at her, a flicker of admiration in his eyes. He smirked and chuckled, "Hold on tight."
As a sharp turn appeared ahead, he floored the gas pedal, the car crashing through the guardrail and plunging toward the seemingly all-consuming river below.
