Chapter 237

"Yeah, ever since my family had that mess, I joined Infinity Unity Group."

Victoria had a sudden thought. "Was it William who got you in?"

He chuckled. "You never miss a beat, do you? Your intuition's still sharp."

Victoria was a bit surprised. "He got you into his family's company?"

Alton's smile was faint, his gaze intense. "Technically, it's his uncle Wayne who runs Infinity Unity Group. As for why, I think you can figure it out, right?"

Victoria had indeed guessed, but she hadn't realized he'd planted this seed years ago.

Alton didn't hold back and spoke openly. "My family hit a crisis, and I lost all support. I had to start from scratch. Even though I graduated from a top university, the competition was brutal, and my family was drowning in debt. My parents' health wasn't great either."

His tone was calm, like he was finally letting out long-held feelings.

"I reached out to a lot of relatives and friends, but none of them were willing to help."

Victoria listened quietly, sighing softly.

She knew all too well the coldness of the world.

Alton's smile was bitter. "In the end, it was Mr. Scott who helped me. He paid off my debts and covered my parents' medical bills. I owe him everything. I swore I'd do anything for him, no matter the cost."

Victoria listened in silence for a long time before asking, "Why are you telling me this?"

"Aren't you his girl?"

Alton's matter-of-fact tone annoyed Victoria. "There's nothing between us. Don't jump to conclusions."

"No relationship? That's hard to believe." Alton seemed to realize something and smiled. "Did you two have a fight? It's normal for couples to argue sometimes."

Victoria let out a mocking laugh. "Have you ever seen a couple stay mad at each other for three years?"

Alton was stunned. "So, you haven't seen each other in three years?"

"There was no need to." Victoria lowered her head and took a sip of tea.

"That's really interesting." Alton leaned forward slightly, looking at her with great interest. "I remember when I drove you back to the hotel, Mr. Scott looked like he wanted to kill me! And you say there's nothing between you two now."

Victoria didn't respond to his diversion.

Alton chuckled. "You've been apart for so long. Want me to fill you in on what's been happening these years?"

"No need." Victoria took another sip of tea. "We've moved on."

"I'm afraid that's just your wishful thinking."

Victoria frowned. "What do you mean?"

Alton looked at her with a mix of amusement and sympathy. "You really don't understand this man, do you? I bet you've been single these past few years, right?"

Victoria retorted loudly, "I have plenty of admirers!"

Alton shook his head with a smile. "I don't even have to think about it. Did all those admirers disappear after confessing their feelings to you?"

"How do you know?" Victoria's eyes widened in shock, staring at Alton in disbelief.

Alton's smile grew even brighter.

He took a slow sip of his tea before continuing. "When you were working at our exhibition hall, a lot of people were interested in you. But Mr. Scott scared them all away, and you had no idea."

Victoria's eyes widened even more, unable to believe it. "Are you saying that William has been..."

"Yes!" Alton said firmly. "Otherwise, with your looks and abilities, how could you have stayed single all these years? The only reason things have been peaceful between you two is because no one around you has made him feel threatened. If someone did, your life wouldn't be so calm!"

Victoria's frown deepened. She hated to think she was being presumptuous.

But what he said made some sense.

Alton watched Victoria. She had become even more captivating over the years, losing some of her youthful naivety and gaining a mature charm.

At this moment, her slightly confused look made her even more endearing. He instinctively raised his hand to touch her head.

But halfway there, he snapped back to reality and pulled his hand back.

He almost made a huge mistake!

He almost crossed William's line!

He remembered when he first joined Infinity Unity Group. William could have helped him with connections, but instead, he let him struggle at the bottom, enduring many hardships.

At first, he thought it was a test. Later, he realized it might have been a form of punishment for daring to covet someone he shouldn't have.

Victoria looked at Alton, who was now smiling helplessly.

His thoughts were written all over his face.

It was because of his trust and closeness to her that he didn't use the usual workplace pretense with her.

Victoria stared at him for a while before suddenly speaking. "Stop overthinking."

Then, she said firmly, "There's nothing between him and me, not the kind of relationship you're thinking of."

Alton smiled. "It doesn't matter what kind of relationship it is. I've just realized one thing: to succeed, you need to align yourself with powerful forces."

Victoria frowned. "Alton, have you been completely assimilated by the system?"

Alton nodded and added seriously, "Completely assimilated."

At that moment, Alton's phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, and his smile widened. "Perfect timing."

He answered the call, immediately adopting a respectful tone. "Mr. Scott."

Victoria was startled and looked up at him.

"Yes, that's right. You're correct. Okay, I understand."

He hung up the phone and said with some helplessness, "I have to go. Duty calls."

"I'll walk you out." Victoria followed him out of the lounge. As they reached the lobby, someone called her name.

"Victoria?" Marcella, now wearing a flirty short dress, sauntered over.

She immediately noticed Alton, her eyes scanning him up and down.

Then, she smiled.

Victoria felt a headache coming on.

As Marcella approached, Victoria leaned close to Alton and whispered, "You can still leave now."

Alton, who had worked his way up from the bottom over the years, could tell what kind of person Marcella was at a glance.

This type of woman was the most troublesome.

He quickly nodded to Victoria. "I'm out of here."

With that, he strode towards the door, where his car was already waiting.

"Was that your friend? Why did he leave?" Marcella looked towards the door, noting Alton's attire and the car he got into, clearly impressed.
