Chapter 118
Seeing him suddenly appear, Isabella was momentarily stunned.
'Isn't he supposed to be in the hospital? How is he here?' She couldn't help but thought.
But upon closer inspection, Michael's pale lips and ashen face said it all. He had forced himself to come despite feeling unwell.
However, Michael's apology did not earn Daniel's forgiveness.
Isabella didn't even want to call Michael. Either they were having a fight, or, as the rumors suggested, their relationship was in trouble.
But Daniel, having experienced so much over the years, didn't show any sign of suspicion on his face, even if he had doubts in his heart.
He said calmly, "I understand you're busy, but Isabella's birthday is a big deal. Her uncles flew in from abroad, and you didn't even show up. What does that mean?"
Originally, Daniel had thought Michael was considerate for arranging for Sean to perform surgery on him.
But today, he had embarrassed Isabella in front of everyone.
He wouldn't let Michael off the hook with just a simple apology.
Isabella was his only granddaughter, and anyone who bullied her was going against the Wilson Family.
Michael could see the anger in Daniel's words. He smiled and took Isabella's hand, interlocking their fingers. "You misunderstand. How could I not come to Isabella's birthday? Besides, we're already trying for a baby. Maybe we'll have good news soon. Just wait and see."
The atmosphere froze.
Isabella, worried about the situation, quickly tried to smooth things over. "Grandpa, see, I wasn't lying. Michael is here, isn't he? Besides, he's now in charge of the entire Brown Family. It's normal for him to be busy. For my sake, please don't blame him."
Thomas chimed in, "Dad, you're too suspicious. You tend to blow small things out of proportion. How can you recover quickly and help Isabella take care of her child if you keep this up?"
"I know my own body. I would recover." Daniel's tone was stern, but his expression had softened considerably.
Seeing that Daniel was no longer questioning them, Isabella finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Her hand felt warm, and she realized that Michael had been holding it tightly the whole time. No wonder Daniel had let him off so easily.
She tried to pull her hand away, but Michael held on even tighter.
He leaned in and whispered, "Grandpa is watching."
Isabella looked over and met Daniel's thoughtful gaze. She instinctively moved closer to Michael.
Michael raised an eyebrow, wrapped his arm around her waist, and seemed pleased with her reaction.
For the rest of the time, the two had to put on a show in front of everyone, especially Daniel, to prove how much they loved each other and to dispel any doubts Daniel might have. Isabella's hand never left Michael's grip.
After a while, a guest came over to chat with Daniel, and Isabella finally turned away and pulled her hand free.
She went to the table to get a glass of champagne, but a large hand suddenly appeared, took her drink, and replaced it with a glass of water.
Isabella looked at him, exasperated. "Michael, Grandpa isn't here right now. You don't need to keep up the act!"
Michael didn't listen. He moved the champagne further away as she tried to reach for it. "You're trying for a baby. You can't drink."
Isabella was silent.
She hadn't expected that to be the reason. Did he really wanted to have a child with her?
But now wasn't the time to discuss this. She was more curious about why he was here. "Aren't you supposed to be in the hospital? Why did you get here?"
She didn't think Michael came for her sake. After all, she wasn't that important to him.
So when Michael hesitated, she sneered. "Michael, I don't believe you came just for my birthday. Do you even believe that yourself?"
Michael's eyes darkened, hiding all his emotions.
His injury should have kept him bedridden, but when he heard she was having a birthday party at the hotel and that she might be gossiped about because of him, he endured the pain and rushed over.
But the sarcasm in her eyes was too obvious. If he admitted it now, she would mock him endlessly.
Even if he had come for her, he couldn't admit it now.
He smirked, "You already guessed it, so why ask? I have my reasons for being here. Even if we're divorced, our business ties remain. Besides, your uncles are visiting Evergreen City for the first time. How could I miss this opportunity?"
So he endured his injury to be here because of the business interests tied to the Wilson Family.
Of course, Michael was a businessman. Valuing opportunities and interests was his instinct.
Looking at Michael, she suddenly seemed to understand something, a faint bitter smile appearing on her lips.
So, Michael's willingness to stay with her and even agree to have a child was all because of the Wilson Family's status and interests.
If she were still the nobody Isabella, divorce would have been a relief for him.
She put down the water glass, her expression turning cold. "Since you're here for family interests, you'd better not show your ambition too clearly. I'm afraid you won't be able to leave this hotel today safely!"
With that, she turned and left without looking back.
As soon as they separated, people at the party began to whisper.
"Did I hear wrong? Didn't they say Mr. Brown and Ms. Taylor were divorced? But it doesn't look like that at all!"
"Yeah, did you hear them just now? They promised Mr. Wilson they'd have a baby. Who gets divorced and still wants to have a baby together?"
"So are they divorced or not? I'm getting confused."
Someone chimed in, enlightening the crowd.
"You guys are overthinking it. Didn't you see Mr. Wilson was angry just now? The Wilson Family in the East and the Brown Family in the South are both powerhouses. Do you think their marriage is something we ordinary people should worry about?"
"Just make sure you don't say the wrong thing and get yourself in trouble!"
With that, everyone fell silent.
After all, this birthday party was hosted by the Wilson Family. Talking about their private matters on their turf was a bit much.
Just as everyone was dropping the topic, they saw two rows of men in black standing orderly at the entrance, looking like they were protecting someone.
Everyone knew the Wilson Family's status in the East, but who could be so important to make such a display at the Wilson Group? Everyone craned their necks to see who it was.
