Chapter 79
Seeing Isabella standing right in front of him, Ethan couldn't believe his eyes. He was both shocked and thrilled.
Isabella, on the other hand, was taken aback. She squinted at him for a moment before realizing it was Ethan, Michael's buddy.
She always knew Ethan was terrible at keeping secrets. If he blabbed about her visit to the gynecology department, who knew what kind of rumors would start flying?
Before Isabella could come up with an excuse to leave, Michael suddenly showed up right in front of her.
'Didn't he go back to the office? What's he doing here?' Isabella wondered.
Instinctively, she hid the diagnosis paper behind her back, not wanting Michael to see it.
Ethan, clueless about what had just gone down, looked at Michael and said, "Michael, why didn't you tell me Isabella was here for a check-up? And in the OB-GYN. Does that mean you two have already..."
Ethan stopped himself just in time, his eyes darting between the two of them.
Isabella shot Ethan a glare. "No! We're divorced. We're strangers now, so watch what you say."
From now on, she and Michael were done. No more contact.
But instead of backing off, Ethan got even more excited. "Even if you're divorced, you're still Isabella, the heiress of the Wilson Group. We're all friends here, and this hospital is owned by my family. If you're not feeling well, I can get you the best doctor."
After that, he was about to get a doctor for her. Isabella quickly stopped him, startled.
She forced a smile. "Really, there's no need. I'm just here to get some medicine. It's not serious, but thanks for your kindness."
Even though she and Michael had split, she still treated his friends the same way she used to. She wasn't about to take out her anger on them. That was her bottom line.
Ethan persisted. "It's okay. My dad is just upstairs; it won't take long."
Isabella shook her head helplessly. "I'm already leaving; it's nothing serious."
She gestured to the medicine box in her hand, which clearly had "emergency contraception" printed on the top left corner.
Michael saw it and his face darkened instantly.
Last night, when they had been intimate, she had softly called his name, and he had felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe she didn't completely hate him; maybe she was just too hurt to care anymore.
But now, he was certain that Isabella didn't like him at all. She was even repulsed by his touch, which was why she had rushed to the hospital for emergency contraception right after their divorce.
Ethan finally stopped trying to find her a doctor and nodded, telling Isabella to take care of herself.
At that moment, Michael stepped forward and blocked her path, his voice low. "Isabella, we're divorced. So, don't come to me with your problems anymore."
Isabella looked at him speechlessly, her mouth twitching. 'Is there something wrong with him? We're divorced; why would I tell him about my problems? Does he think I have nothing better to do?'
Fortunately, they were no longer connected.
She couldn't be bothered to argue with him anymore. "Don't worry, my problems have nothing to do with you anymore. You'll never hear about them."
With that, she clenched the medicine in her hand and walked away quickly.
Outside the hospital, Jesse was already waiting, ready to pick her up as soon as she appeared.
Jesse was tall and stood out in the crowd, so Isabella spotted him immediately as she walked out.
As she made her way towards Jesse, someone called out from behind.
"Isabella, can I talk to you for a minute?" Ethan had run over, still catching his breath.
Isabella turned around, puzzled. "What do you need?"
She barely knew Ethan. He was just Michael's longtime friend, and they never included her in their gatherings.
Ethan finally caught his breath. "You know how Michael is. He's got this weird temper, always keeping things to himself and saying hurtful stuff when he does talk. So, I came to explain on his behalf."
He spoke quickly, as if afraid Isabella would walk away any second.
Isabella was a bit surprised, but when she heard he was there to explain for Michael, her eyes filled with faint sarcasm.
"Ethan, you must have heard earlier that Michael and I are divorced. Given the circumstances, do you think there's any need to explain anything for him?" She didn't give Ethan a chance to respond. She waved him off and quickly walked up to Jesse, linking arms with him.
Jesse gave Ethan a wary glance before protectively escorting Isabella to the car.
Ethan watched their close behavior, coupled with Jesse's earlier warning look, and sighed deeply.
Isabella was now the heiress of the Wilson Group. With her status, how could she lack male attention?
But thinking of Michael's hurt expression earlier, he couldn't help but feel a bit regretful. Were these two really going to part ways just like that?
Meanwhile, Isabella was sitting in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce, resting with her eyes closed.
Jesse could see her fatigue through the rearview mirror, his eyes filled with concern as he quickly started the car and drove away from the hospital.
On the way, he asked softly, "Ms. Taylor, your birthday is in a few days. Now that your identity is public, Mr. Wilson wants to throw a big party. What do you think?"
Jesse had been chosen by Daniel to protect Isabella since childhood. He understood her inner fragility and sadness at this moment. Even though he felt for her, he couldn't ask those questions now.
He could only change the subject and talk about her birthday party.
"Whose idea was it?" Isabella still had her eyes closed, looking very tired.
For the past three years, she had been with the Brown Family, unable to show her identity. On her birthday, she could only video call Daniel and receive gifts from her uncles.
This birthday coincided with her identity being revealed. Daniel, feeling sorry for her, wanted to throw a big party to make up for the past three years, which was understandable.
If it were up to her, she would just celebrate quietly in Daniel's ward room. She didn't want her birthday to be too noisy.
But now, Daniel's health was entirely dependent on medication, and she couldn't bear to refuse him.
Daniel probably couldn't handle organizing the birthday party himself, so if he suggested it, someone else must have taken over the task.
"It was Mr. Atticus Wilson!" Jesse responded, looking at the rearview mirror. Isabella nodded, feeling relieved. "Since Atticus is coming back, let him handle everything. I have no special requests."
Three years ago, she had come to Michael with a passionate heart, believing that her fiery enthusiasm would eventually move him.
Three years later, she not only failed to win Michael's heart but also ended up hurting herself.
Her heart, after years of cold indifference, had become numb.
Now, she only wished for her family's safety and Daniel's health, nothing more.
