Chapter 350
At 9 am, Darcy entered the CEO's office in a hurry, holding a thermal lunch box.
Lawrence had just finished an international morning meeting, his expression cold as he took his headache medicine due to his sleep, which had not been good for the past three years.
Although Darcy had initially mentioned developing a new medical technique for his insomnia, the results were not ideal. He couldn't help but inexplicably remember three years ago, when he always slept soundly beside Winnie.
"Mr. Rodriguez, you haven't had breakfast yet, right? I got up early and made sandwiches for you," Darcy said with a soft smile. As soon as she entered, she immediately asked with concern and a hint of grievance in her voice, "Has Sidney recovered after seeing the doctor? You didn't bring him back, and I couldn't sleep all night worrying about him."
Lawrence already had a headache, and her melancholic voice made it worse. He lifted his eyes and looked at the woman in front of him with indifference. It never occurred to him before that she spoke with various hidden intentions. She wanted to ask him where he was last night. Lawrence wasn't a fool; he simply disliked these roundabout ways. He stared at the hint of redness around her eyes and couldn't tell whether her worry was genuine or not.
"Darcy, do you really worry about Sidney?" he suddenly asked with little emotion.
Darcy hesitated for a moment, feeling guilty under his intense gaze. She walked closer to him, tears streaming down her face. "Are you still blaming me? I've explained everything. Yesterday was just a careless mistake. Next time, I will give him my best. Can't you be more forgiving? I may not be as careful in taking care of others despite growing up in a privileged environment."
Lawrence furrowed his brows, his gaze turning slightly cold. She was still diverting the focus, not specifically mentioning the fish bones she accidentally left for Sidney. He was once easily deceived, believing her to be kind and gentle, which made him susceptible to manipulation. He never fully grasped who she truly was. Maybe, in recent times, she had undergone a sudden change.
The man's expression grew stern, showing a hint of impatience. "I've already said yesterday that you don't need to interfere with Sidney's diet anymore. Focus on your own tasks and reduce conflicts."
Darcy became somewhat annoyed, her gaze hiding some resentment. "If I don't take care of Sidney, then who will? Mr. Rodriguez, we're getting married soon. Naturally, I'll be his stepmother. Are you suggesting Winnie should take care of him?"
"Winnie is his biological mother; her occasionally helping is not out of the question. Children also need to be happy."
Darcy grew completely anxious. "Are you implying that after we get married, you'll continue seeing Winnie with Sidney? Do you plan to maintain contact with her? Where does that leave me?"
Lawrence felt the urge to explode, but her question caught him off guard. A nameless emotion surged within his heart. He furrowed his brows, instinctively denying, "Marriage was my promise to you three years ago. After we're married, I will abide by its principles. You can rest assured."
Darcy's breath eased, realizing she had revealed a bit too much of her true self. Although she was furious, his words made it seem like marrying her was an obligation he had to fulfill. Nonetheless, she immediately leaned closer, her eyes turning red. "I'm really happy that you think this way of me. I know you're a responsible and upright man. It's just that last night, you took Sidney to see Winnie and didn't return until the morning. It got me a little carried away."
Lawrence discreetly moved away from her. Ever since Winnie's return, particularly after sleeping with her, he couldn't stand Darcy's touch. He also found himself increasingly unwilling to stay at the mansion. Last night, he was so infatuated with Winnie that he didn't want to leave her apartment. The stark difference between these two women puzzled him. He couldn't comprehend it and made him wonder if he was turning into a jerk. He was about to get married, yet he couldn't stop thinking about his ex-wife, who was carefree and indifferent toward him.
Lawrence became irritated and slouched heavily in his chair, interrupting her. "Go and focus on the wedding preparations. Don't disturb me unless it's necessary."
"I know you're busy, but the custom-made diamond wedding dress from Milan has just arrived this afternoon. Will you accompany me to try it on?" Darcy knew that the wedding dress was worth 4 million but Lawrence was incredibly generous when it comes to money. Darcy held onto his arm, hoping to see a spark of agreement in his eyes.
"You decide for yourself."
Her expression stiffened and she pouted, complaining, "This is our wedding. How can you not be concerned at all?"
Lawrence paused and raised his gaze with a hint of severity, saying, "Darcy, besides nagging about the wedding, is there anything else you're occupied with at the moment? Stop clinging to me all the time; it exhausts me. Find something to do, you used to be a powerful woman."
Darcy's body suddenly tensed, feeling an uncomfortable chill all over. From the man's eyes, she saw a trace of weariness. Those words meant that Winnie, that wretched Triton female CEO, who was intelligent and sharp, had attracted his interest. Darcy cursed inwardly at the realization.
For three years, she lived a lavish life as his pampered companion in high society circles in Lymington, enjoying extravagant spending and carefree living. Previously, she portrayed herself as a formidable woman solely to win his affection, with the ultimate aim of marrying into an elite wealthy family. Darcy's attention was never devoted to her career. However, as of recent, he had been showing disdain toward her.
She clenched her fists tightly, gazing at Lawrence who was still climbing to the top of the pyramid and dominating the world. Maybe Mars was right, she needed to make him experience some setbacks while playing the role of a savior, so that he would constantly appreciate her. He should realize her worth and stop being infatuated with Winnie.
The opportunity was just right. Darcy, as if determined, slowly raised her head and smiled. "Mr. Rodriguez, do you think I'm too idle? Then perhaps I should frequently visit the research department, laboratory, and marketing department of Island Electronics in the future so you won't say I'm constantly bothering you."
Lawrence didn't regard it seriously, but just hoped that she wouldn't be clingy to him anymore. He nodded and coldly stated, "The laboratory is confidential. You can enter and exit other places. You can leave now."
She turned around and walked out of the office, her eyes cold. After leaving the building, she sat in the car and angrily pounded the steering wheel several times. She turned her head and called Mars, "Hey? I figured out a way to return to Island Electronics. When are we going to execute your plan?"
Mars chuckled and hung up Darcy's call. She seemed more anxious than himself. It appeared that she was feeling quite threatened. The wedding date was approaching and Lawrence was still involved with that Winnie.
He lifted his sinister gaze from the car window, capturing a glimpse of a woman coming out of the company building. He clicked his tongue. No wonder Lawrence loved her so much; no woman could compare to Winnie with those legs. Not to mention, the more he looked, the more he thought she resembled Ava Anderson from the Blanchet family.
Mars flicked off some ashes from his cigarette.
Winnie emerged from the Triton Building, about to head to Island Electronics Group for the jewelry exhibition project, when she suddenly encountered a man who blocked her path. He had a slender figure and was wearing a light pink shirt. His facial features were somewhat sinister, unlike Jeremy's elegant appearance, but rather genuinely malevolent.
Winnie furrowed her brows slightly. She was certain that she didn't know this man. Yet, he approached her willingly, with a meaningful smirk on his face. "Winnie, I've heard so much about you. I've been waiting for you here for a long time. Would you give me an opportunity for us to get to know each other?"
Winnie's gaze turned cold. "Do you have something to discuss with me? Please introduce yourself before starting a conversation about business."
He lightly chuckled. "Mars Martin. I have something to discuss with you regarding a potential collaboration."
Winnie paused for a moment, remembering something. She reached into her bag for her phone, opened Facebook, and saw that Rock had replied to her this morning. She hadn't read it carefully yet.
She quickly read it again: "Winnie, the person behind the West Iron Group, rumored to be called Mars, is from Trento City. This person has quite the influence and is connected to the first prominent family in the country, the Rodriguez family."
Winnie's heart skipped a beat. She looked back at the man in front of her again.
